Passions vs. Interests & Amy (week 1)

Here we go!  In just a few short months we’ll be driving down to North Carolina to put into practice God’s call to “love your neighbor as yourself”. But between now and then, we’re going to spend some time preparing. This week, Zach dives right into thinking about what it looks like to live passionately and starts giving us some great examples to follow (with many more to come!)

So here’s how this will work.  Each week I’m going to ask you to process some of the questions at the end of the chapter by posting your answers on here. I also might post a question or two of my own for you to respond to. Please take the time to respond to them below by leaving a comment (make sure you include your first name & last initial on the comment so I know who it is).  And when you come each week, make sure to review the previous week’s conversation and read what your teammates have written & respond to & interact with them…we’re in this together!  When you respond (either to the questions or your teammates), take your time & write out your thoughts.  Be honest with your thoughts…honesty builds community & will allow us to trust each other and really grow as a team. Don’t just try to finish your answers as quickly as you can…make me read a ton ; )  Seriously…the more you think through this stuff, the more it’ll help you prepare.  Another good idea each week is to talk through the questions with your parents.  I’m sure they’d be glad to take the time to listen to your answers and discuss your thoughts!

In your own words what’s the difference between a passion and an interest?

There are 4 groupings of questions at the end of chapter 2. Share your thoughts/answers with us.

  1. Catherine M Says:

    1. God gives you strenth inyourweakness so you shouldn’t be ashamed of things you think are weaknesses
    2. God’s power is shownin weakness so again don’t be ashamed of weakness
    3. you can tell them God will do somthing through their weakness for other people

(ecuse, ehem, excuse eny spelig erar) ;)

  2. Nicole B Says:

An interest is something that you like to do, like a sport or reading. If you’re passionate about something you have a strong desire for it.

  3. Camden B Says:

1.Passion is things that u luv. And interests is things u like 2 do

2.This differs from Amys story because Amy didn’t have any experience in what she did and she had a disease that made her muscles weak.

3.they describe a weakness as a positive thing by saying that sometimes weaknesses can b good so u dont do things that r bad

4.I would tell them that god luvs them even with there weakness.

  4. Nicole B Says:

weakness is stonger then men, power is the perfect weakness

  5. Nicole B Says:

amy had a disease that made her musiles weak

  6. Alyssa R. Says:

Amy grew up in the 1800s. She always wanted blue eyes but she had brown eyes. When Amy prayed to God,God said “no” because you are who you are.

  7. Alyssa R. Says:

A passion is something you really want. An interest is something that you “love” or “like” to do. Such as playing baseball or basketball or even tennis.

  8. Molly M. Says:

0.An interest is something you think of as fun or a hobby or sometimes dream of doing. A passion is something you try to accomplish or something you try and try at or even something you just love.

    1. Amy really didn’t have any experiences in what she did it just kinda hit her (WHAPO!!!) that that is what she wanted to do(help slaves) at first it wasn’t a passion and then it developed to a passion.

    2. It says that God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest human strength. and God’s power is made perfect in weakness so these verses describe weakness as a positive thing because God’s weakness is greater than our strength so God’s weakness -to us- really is not weak at all it’s greater than our strength-ness-ess.:-)

    3. I would encourage that person by having them read those verses and explaining them to that person.

  9. Molly M. Says:

is that long enough Joel????:-) HEHEHE

  10. Molly M. Says:

  16. Austin Says:

i think that examinedd life is when ur always being examined by god.

  17. Molly M. Says:

i didnt understand a word you said

  18. Emily D Says:

Passion drives you to keep doing that thing. Interest is something that you want to do but you wouldn’t want to persu that with your life.

  19. Catherine M Says:

Emily, I’m not sure what you ment by “that thing” could you explain that?

  20. Catherine M Says:

  25. Catherine M Says:

  26. Paula G. Says:

Well. Now I see what happens when you put computers in the hands of soon-to-be 7th graders! They go wild for emoticons and act all goofy. AND I LUV IT!!! I likke what you guys have said about passion vs. interest. I hope you all develop a passion for caring for others and serving them. I developed that passion on my first mission trip in 7th grade. Cool, huh?

  27. Paula G. Says:

and how come I got such a germy looking avatar-thingy???

  28. Paula G. Says:

I’m not really sure if I’m supposed to answer the questions, since I’m one of the “Grups”. (That’s a Star Trek original series word for “grownups”, but I’ll answer stuff til Joel tells me to stop, k?
    1. Amy’s passion was God-driven. God called Amy, at least I would think so, given her success. And when we follow God’s call to minister, he goes before us and creates success, whether we’re good at what we’re doing or not. Now, that doesn’t mean that if I have a passion for roofing (which I kinda do, if it is putting roofs on houses for a ministry like Habitat for Humanity), that I’m gonna be the best roofer, but it does mean that God can use me to touch the lives of someone around me. And that is success. Get it?
    2. In our weakness, God can be seen working clearly, when we give him the glory for the success.
    3. Sometimes the best way to encourage someone who lives with suffering is just to come alongside them and be a friend. You don’t have to say, “Dude, I wanna be ur friend cuz you are pitiful,” but just talk and ahang out, and just let them forget for awhile that life is painful.
    4. ARGH! I have so many weaknesses! But I know He uses them…

  29. Olivia F. Says:

    1. We are passionate about things that help ourselves. Amy was passionate about helping other people and because God asked her to.
    2. Weakness is a positive thing because when we suceed then we can truely see God working in us.
    3. My best friend Libby has dark brown eyes and wants blue eyes like Amy did. I told her that they are not a weakness but a strength and I told her about the story with Amy and that her brown eyes will vome in handy to her someday.
    4. I have many weaknesses but I think one of my greastest weaknesses are my eyes. i can not see very well at all but I know they are like that for a reason.

  30. Andrew Says:

    1. What I thought of intrests vs. passions is well… pasion is somthing you really like and intrest is sort of like that but different

    2. With Amy I thought that god doesn’t say yes to everyting because it could help you later like it did for Amy. Also I thought that it was very cool that she saved all those children just because she had brown eyes! :)

  31. Andrew Says:

wow check out my sweet icon thingy!!!!!! :0 lol ha now im actully laughing because it was in the book haha!

  32. Andrew Says:

my guy looks like a tree actully now that i think about it and i also feel like im talking to myself.

  33. Austin Says:

    2. it describes that because weafnee can help u sometimes.
    3. if someone had a weakness i could help them by cherring them on.
    4. what i have a weakness about is running long distances and working out longer and other stuff but that takes to long to explain thanks.

  34. Isaiah C. Says:

Interest is something that you like to do. Passion is something that you really, really, really, really,REALLY care about.

  35. Isaiah C. Says:

Yay. I get a winking pizza slice with legs as my icon. Whoopee.

  36. Jenn.C. Says:

I’m probably going to do this wrong but
I really like this chapter because Amy thinks that since her family have blue eyes she thinks that blue eyes are normal, and she doesn’t want to be different for her family but she finds out that her not looking like her family let’s her blend in with other people.
    how was that

  37. Jenn.C. Says:

yay my icon is a green apple with a banana mouth purple arms and a spring
    I think

  38. Catherine M. Says:

I think that would be a compliment. (because they look pretty wierd while you Jen.C. do not)

  39. Nicole B Says:

    jenn c i ♥your icon
